Exercise Programs for Older Adults in Senior Living

Here we go again, pump that iron, feel the pain, get on the treadmill! Seriously though, a recent study highlights the importance of exercise programs for older adults in senior living and the impact they can have on reducing hospitalizations. The study had 718 older adults participate in a structured, individualized exercise training program. The guided sessions included cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility training, with 57.2% of the participants continuing for at least three months—an impressive outcome!

At the end of the 3-month study period, all-cause hospitalization was 46% lower in older adults who participated in the exercise program compared to those who did not. Interestingly, the rates were significantly lower in women who participated in the program, while no significant association was found in men. This shows yet again that exercise programs for older adults in senior living can lower the risk of hospitalization.

One of the centers I visited recently had a small circle of residents using 1–3-pound hand weights. They “pumped iron” to the beat of some great “Rat Pack” music, smiling and engaged, little did they know they were decreasing their risk of hospitalization!

Get going—you could benefit from a little exercise too! If the weather permits, take a walk outdoors and soak in some Vitamin D. Discuss exercise options with your QAPI committee, involve your skilled therapy department (Part B services are often underutilized), get your activity staff involved, turn up the music, and enjoy!
