Do you remember when you were a kid and wouldn’t eat anything that was green or had “weird” texture? Well, bring on the avocado! Sure, many of us still won’t eat one unless it is mixed with some hot peppers and salsa and served with hot, salty tortilla chips, right? Maybe it is time to reconsider that weird looking green thing!
Here’s a little nutritional information, in case you were wondering, Avocados are a nutrient-dense fruit. Although it looks more like a vegetable, it is classified as a fruit. Avocados are packed with up to 20% of the daily recommended fiber, 10% of potassium, 5% of magnesium and 15% of folate. Not impressed? How about this, people who consume avocados have:
- Higher, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) good cholesterol
- A lower risk for coronary artery disease
- A lower risk of metabolic syndrome
- Lower body weight and body mass index (BMI)
- Smaller waist circumference
So there, you seem to be showing more interest! I personally love avocados, yes with salty chips but also on fresh, toasted farm bread for breakfast, sliced on salads, and I make a great guacamole to enjoy on taco salad! Seriously, take a bite, try it out, if you don’t like it try putting it in a smoothie! The options are as endless as the benefits, so enjoy! Stay well and stay informed!
