What a nasty infection, right? C. difficile infections are among the most common causes of healthcare-associated infections, and getting rid of them isn’t easy. These stubborn spores resist many hospital-grade disinfectants, making them especially challenging in senior living communities.
But researchers may be making progress. In a study published in the National Library of Medicine, titled Efficacy of copper-impregnated antimicrobial surfaces against Clostridioides difficile spores, scientists tested the impact of copper-infused surfaces on C. difficile spores. They inoculated “copper coupons” containing 20% copper oxide with the spores. After just four hours, spore counts were reduced by a whopping 96.8% to 97.3%. That’s impressive!
Before we rush to install copper grab bars and bed rails, it’s worth noting that this research is still in its early stages. More studies are needed to determine how copper can best be used in real-world care settings.
In the meantime, we can’t give up the fight. C. difficile infections cause the worst kind of diarrhea—not to mention intense abdominal pain and overall discomfort for residents. While experts continue to debate the role of antibiotics, there’s growing interest in the use of probiotics to help restore healthy gut flora. Probiotics support the body’s own natural microbes, and that can be a big help for residents at risk—or already living with—a C. difficile infection.
So what can be done today? Talk with your medical director about incorporating probiotics into residents’ care plans, especially for those with a history of C. difficile infections. It may not be a silver bullet, but it just might offer the relief your residents need.
