I came across an interesting article this week that talked about the effects of being happy. Well, of course, I had to read it. Who doesn’t want to learn more about being happy? I have to admit, the other side of the article discussed cognitive impairment and dementia, that wasn’t so happy! The good news, the article discussed the results of a 12-year study done in China, and found the odds of developing cognitive impairment were lower in those with better psychological well-being!
Now, add to this information, the isolation and loneliness our seniors experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Is it no wonder that today many of our residents are exhibiting symptoms of new-onset dementia? Of course, it makes sense, but can we do anything to change it? Maybe! So, as we set up our umpteenth bingo game in the activity center (I know, they love bingo), maybe we should be diving a little deeper and providing activities that enhance the psychological well-being of our residents.
Think about quality of life, how can we provide services to our residents that maybe, just maybe, will decrease the risk of increased cognitive impairment. Psychological well-being, caring for the individual as an individual and as you would want to be cared for, encouraging positive relationships with others, providing a feeling of purpose and meaning in life, and encouraging autonomy (safely). See, simple, NOT! Stay the course, you got this! Stay well, stay informed and stay tuned!
