For about 2 years I wore a “fitbit” type product to measure my activity level, sleep patterns, etc. What I found is that it stressed me out. I was constantly challenging myself only to be disappointed at the end of the day when I checked my total steps. I got rid of the device and decided to just be healthy whether I got 10,000 steps in or 5,000 steps in, lifestyle was more important than the number of steps I was taking!

I was very proud of myself when I read a recent article that said that the 10,000-step goal was rooted in marketing more than science, yay! Today we know that health benefits kick in long before 10,000 steps and indeed even as few as 2,500 steps a day are enough to begin reducing your risk of dying of cardiovascular disease! 4,000 steps help reduce the risk for early death from any cause (early death is not defined). To give it some perspective, the average American takes about 4,800 steps a day.

What does all of this mean? First, marketing plays a huge role in our individual lives. It can challenge us, or it can consume us. I’m on my moderation soap box again but read the study, look at the numbers, don’t beat yourself up! Sure, would 10,000 steps be a wonderful thing? Likely, but how likely are you to achieve that goal daily. Be realistic, work at a healthy lifestyle, understand that health is important and take care of yourself! Stay well and stay informed!
