You know, antibiotics can be a real lifesaver—but only when they’re used appropriately. In senior living facilities, taking a thoughtful approach to antibiotic use can make a world of difference. The CDC offers two invaluable tools to guide these efforts.

The first is the Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship, a comprehensive guide that provides senior living facilities with foundational principles for responsible antibiotic use. This document highlights key elements like leadership commitment, accountability, and training—all designed to support a culture of careful antibiotic management and protect residents from unnecessary Multi drug-resistant organisms (MDROs).

The second tool is the Antibiotic Stewardship Checklist, a practical, step-by-step resource that helps facilities put the Core Elements into action. The checklist walks through essential tasks such as tracking antibiotic use, educating staff, and designating accountability, to assist in ensuring that every aspect of antibiotic stewardship is in place.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the key recommendations from the CDC:

  1. Leadership Support: Effective stewardship starts with committed leadership. Facility leaders can support their teams by providing the resources necessary to make appropriate antibiotic decisions.
  2. Accountability and Training: Designating someone to oversee antibiotic use and ensuring staff are trained in best practices can make a meaningful difference.
  3. Monitoring and Feedback: Consistently tracking and reviewing antibiotic use enables facilities to adjust practices as needed, improving resident outcomes.

For a deeper dive, HealthCap’s Antibiotic Stewardship webinar offers insights specifically tailored to senior living. By following these guidelines and adopting responsible practices, senior living facilities can prevent unnecessary antibiotic use, reduce the risks associated with prescribing antibiotics for conditions that do not meet criteria, and play a crucial role in combating multi-drug-resistant organisms.
