We All Do It!

You know the drill, you turn on YouTube and find a workout session that meets your needs at the moment. Your decision might be based on time constraints, fitness level, interest, and any other factors however, do you “warmup/stretch” when you start your program? Most video training sessions begin with a warmup, whether it is stretching, fast marching, arm swinging, etc. but many people (me included) tend to fast forward through the warm up (who has time for that?)! There are even some studies out there that suggest that stretching isn’t necessary at all (you can always find someone to agree with you!)

Bring on a study from 2020 where they found that stretching was uniquely associated with a lower risk for all-cause mortality among American adults. Then a more recent study in 2023 found essentially the same thing! So, all my yoga loving friends, you win! In fact, stretching doesn’t have to be uncomfortable, you can stop when you feel resistance and still get the benefits of increased flexibility. Sure, you may want to gradually push yourself just a little bit further but not to the point of causing pain/injury.

The studies found that there are distinct benefits to stretching including:

  • Strength – you lengthen muscles but are still applying tension to muscles and connective tissues when stretching.
  • Reduced Arterial Stiffness – If your body doesn’t move well, your blood doesn’t flow well – poor flexibility is associated with arterial stiffness.
  • Improved performance – If you improve your range of motion and hold positions you will probably perform better with less risk of injury.
  • Fewer injuries – Flexibility reduces injuries by improving balance, reducing the risk of falling.

Bottom line, there is enough research to support “stretching”. Not to downplay the importance of strength training as well, a combination of both is a bonus. Remember, you are important, you can’t do anything well if you don’t feel good! Talk to your caregivers about starting an exercise club, get them stretching and moving, maybe even a yoga class a couple days a week and don’t forget the protein smoothies! Stay well and stay informed!
